- UV Degradation
| What's Polyurethane Foam?
Polyurethane foam is an insulating foam material often used on rooftops.
Two liquid components are combined and sprayed onto a surface to form SPF. The components react and harden to form a rigid, waterproof insulating layer.
Polyurethane foam is self flashing and is the roofing material of choice for fixing ponding water problems on nearly-flat or flat roofs.
Reflectivity of Polyurethane Foam Roofs
The solar reflectivity of Polyurethane Foam Roofs depends on the color of the finish coat.
Polyurethane foam has excellent insulating properties and roof coatings blocks UV rays to prevent foam degradation.
Elastomeric coatings provide the highest reflectivity and is a very popular option for building owners. Leaks in built up roofs are difficult to isolate and a seamless roof coating system is the best alternative to roof replacement. White roof coatings can reflect up to 90% of the heat from the sun |
Why Consider a Polyurethane Foam Roof Coating Application?
A polyurethane foam roof coating can extend the life of your roof by 10 years or more. Sprayed Polyurethane Foam deteriorates quickly when exposed to the sun's UV-rays. It needs to be coated with a UV protective coating immediately after installation. Elastomeric roof coatings are the roofing material of choice for this application.
Typically, polyurethane foam roofs have 1 - 2 inches of foam sprayed over an existing roof such as metal, built up or modified bitumen. It is then topcoated with an elastomeric roof coating to provide a watertight, UV protective membrane.
Polyurethane foam must be recoated every 10 years or so as a preventive measure |

Polyurethane Foam Roof Restoration Process
- Cleaning and Surface Preparation
- The entire polyurethane roof was thoroughly washed using a 3,000 psi pressure washer. A biodegradeable degreaser was used to ensure a clean surface. All seams, flashings and penetrations were carefully sealed to render the roof watertight.
- Priming
- Priming ensures a good adhesion between the polyurethane foam roof surface and the elastomeric coating.
- Top Coating
- At least 30 dry mils of elastomeric roof coating is applied on the entire polyurethane foam roof in 2 coats.

|
AFTER: A leak-free, seamless elastomeric roofing membrane now covers the old, weathered polyurethane foam roof. If this polyurethane foam roof is properly maintained with periodic recoating, it can have an indefinite life expectancy. |
